Cork Worlds Adjudication Team Announcements

Message from Derek Lande:

Hi,

I am delighted to announce that Cork Worlds has appointed the remaining members of its adjudication team. Erin O'Brien, Ivan Ah Sam and Rory Gillis have agreed to join the team as Deputy Chief Adjudicators. We have also decided to appoint Daniel Patrick McCarthy as an Assistant Chief Adjudicator for the team. Brief excerpts from the CV's of the new members of the team follow which I hope make it clear why these individuals will make an excellent contribution to the running of the competition.

I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank all of those who applied, it was a very tough decision to have to take.

Looking forward to seeing many of you in Thailand.

Regards,
Derek Lande

WUPID Day 2

As I sit here we are waiting for the computer with the tab to arrive. I went with the debaters on the monorail this morning and the computer went in a car. Unlike yesterday when the roadblocks were outside the city and therefore the city was very quite today there are checkpoints inside the city so while traffic is moving it is very slow.

We have only 2 debates to complete before 5:30 so we are planning to get them done as quickly as possible and then people can go shopping. The break night starts at 10pm tonight.

As you may have noticed I didn't post photos to the blog. I have them on my phone but when I got to the room last night I laid down for 10 minutes and woke up 4 hours later. I'll post them later today. I will also post the break details (after they are anounced).

Sydney are top of the tab with 9 points. Cork and another Sydney team are on 8.

WUPID Round 3

Motion:

THBT CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF A PEACEFUL SOCIETY.

We are running about an hour behind schedule which isn't too bad given that we moved the briefings to today.

WUPID Round 2

Motion:
THBT THE STATE SHOULD ONLY PROVIDE EDUCATION IN THE MEDIUM OF THE FIRST LANGUAGE.

Update from WUPID: Round 1

As I type this Round 1 debates of the 2007 CIMB WUPID are underway.

As with most tournaments we had a couple of "slight delays". Problems in Bangkok Airport and delays in the arrival of some Malaysian Teams meant that we decided to postpone the Debaters and adjudicators briefing from yesterday to today. We had 1.5 hours for "event briefings" this morning so we decided that this was a better use of time (and allowed us go shopping yesterday).

This morning we had the normal delays getting people up and to breakfast. We also had a problem with the tab laptop being older than the printer in the tab room so we couldn't get drivers for it. Runners were swiftly dispatched to purchase a new printer. Even with all this we are running around an hour late so that's not too bad.

There are 40 teams and around 40 judges.

The Motion for round 1 is: THW PURSUE A POLICY OF CONSTRUCTIVE ENGAGEMENT WITH ROGUE STATES

I have taken photos which I intend to upload to the flikr account. There is wireless access in the hotel but with the effects of jet lag in full swing last night I couldn't face the prospect of uploading the photos when I got to bed at 3am after the championship Dinner, inputting the final data into the tab system and attending the end of one of the "room parties". Hopefully tonight I will get to upload the photos.

First tab sheet just arrived........
