ISTANBUL YEDITEPE OPEN 2008

It gives me great pleasure to announce Istanbul YEDITEPE OPEN 2008 Second Edition.(We did the first one in June)

It will take place in 28-29-30 November.

This is the last big chance before Cork Worlds to improve your debating skills.You will also get the opportunity to join the trainings and seminars which will be given by our experienced judges.

THE ADJUDICATON: Great feedback and fairly balanced judges are the most important things for a good debate tournament. Therefore, we are going to subsidize 10 extraordinary judges from Europe to increase the quality of debating as we did before. The Team:

SMU IV

On behalf of the SMU Debating Society, I would like to invite your institution to participate in the SMU Intervarsity Debating Championship 2008 (SMU IV 2008). Held annually, SMU IV is Singapore's oldest intervarsity championship (in the British Parliamentaryf ormat). It will be held on 18-19 October 2008.

There would be four preliminary rounds (three on Saturday and one on Sunday) followed by a break to the semi's. This year, Joey Pang will return as Chief Adjudicator. Joey was in the only breaking team from Asia at Worlds 2007 in Vancouver, Canada, and has done well in numerous competitions, including as champion of the inaugural Singapore Debate Open 2007.

Details:
Date: 18-19 October 2008.
Venue: School of Economics/School of Social Sciences building, 90 Stamford Road, Singapore 178903 - 5 minutes from Dhoby Ghaut MRT (metro) station, 10 minutes from City Hall MRT station.
Time: Registration would begin on 8:00am on Saturday near Subway & Cottage Waffle Place. Participants should report in by 9:00am on Sunday.
Registration fee: S$20/pax.

There is a n-1 rule for adjudicators.

We do not provide accommodation but will assist in finding accommodation; non-Singapore participants seeking assistance in finding accommodation are advised to register early and send us an email.

Korea in January

The Korea Development Institute of Public Policy and Management is pleased to announce an open call for applications for 6 faculty members to teach debate/public speaking and academic writing in English in Seoul, Korea during the month of January.

Dates: January 3 (arrival) to January 31 (departure)

Position Description: Instructors will be assigned, depending on their preference, to teach an intensive English course, either a course on debate/public speaking or a course on academic writing. The audience are the incoming graduate students in the MPP program (Masters of Public Policy and in the MBA (Masters in Business Administration. The audience are primarily mid-level managers at Korean corporations, Korean government officials and government officials from a wide range of developing nations in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America and Europe.

Teaching Load: Classes will run Monday through Friday, for 4 hours each day. There will be a break on the 26th and 27th of January for the Lunar New Year holiday prior to the conclusion of the term.

Weekends are free for sightseeing, skiing, or enjoying the fine culinary, cultural and social options that a city of 15 million people has to offer!

Qualifications: Applicants should possess at least a Master’s Degree in business, the humanities or the social sciences with experience in teaching public speaking, debate, or academic writing. Experience teaching ESL/ELD students (non-native English speakers) is highly preferred.

Salary: Faculty will be paid W75,000 per hour of teaching (approximately $75 per hour). Net compensation should be around $5000 for the month. Faculty will be required to provide their own plane ticket and housing. The KDI School will help in reserving hotel or hostel space for faculty members.

Qatar Debate – New Coaching Opportunities in November

QatarDebate is the National Debating Organisation for Qatar and a member of the Qatar Foundation. QatarDebate was established in September 2007 with the aim of developing, supporting and raising the standard of open discussion and debate among students in Qatar and across the Middle East, shaping the Global Citizens of today and the intellectual leaders of tomorrow. The programme is overseen by an Executive Director, Dr. Hayat Maarafi, and run by a Program Manager, Mr. Alex Just.

In its first year, QatarDebate has run workshops on debate for over 2000 students and faculty at over 30 different educational institutions across Qatar, within Education City and beyond. QatarDebate administered the first ever Qatar-wide debate league between schools and universities from February 2008, and ran National Schools and National Universities debating competitions attended by over 400 students in March 2008.

Although the QatarDebate format is a modified version of the World Schools/Australs format anyone with debate coaching experience may apply.

We promise to provide a unique experience for all our trainers who will receive the following for assisting with our coaching programme:

* Accommodation in a 5-Star Hotel in Doha, with all food and internal travel expenses covered
* USD$200 per coaching day (engagements will be between 7 and 10 days)

Australian Women's Results

Results from the just concluded Australian Women's Parliamentary Debating Champs in Sydney, Australia (hosted by UNSW):

Winners: University of Sydney Union 3 (Katherine Connolly and Steph D'Souza)
Runners-Up: Victoria University of Wellington (Kathy Errington and Ella Edginton)
Finalists: University of Sydney Union 2 (Giselle Kenny and Bronwyn Cowell), University of Queensland (Lauren Humphrey and Georgia Heathcote)

Best Speaker: Naomi Oreb (University of Sydney Union)

Australian Women's Final

The Grand Final of the Australian Women's Parliamentary Debating Champs is currently going on. In the final is:
