SSE Riga & LMT IV 2008

It is our pleasure to invite you to SSE Riga & LMT IV 2008 taking place from 12-14 December. Celebrating its 10th jubilee edition, we are committed to making the tournament an experience way beyond just ordinary debating.

For ten years maintaining high quality debating and competent judging accompanied by lavish socials with unlimited free alcohol and excellent food in the splendid surroundings of the central Riga’s Art Nouveau architecture, SSE Riga & LMT IV has become a real highlight among the events of this kind in Central and Eastern Europe. It will indeed remain such in 2008 captivating with a funky atmosphere, creative flare and passion for controversy only Riga can offer.

While keeping the cornerstone aspects of our traditional package we constantly strive for further enhancements. During this year’s event we will be delighted to accommodate you at the 5-star Radisson SAS hotel.

Delivering our promise of fair and professional adjudication Co-CAs of the tournament - Nick Devlin, the former director of Debating at the Cambridge Union Society, and Yuri Romanenkov, the ESL finalist at WUDC 2007 in Vancouver, are in the process of selecting a pool of highly qualified adjudicators. It already includes Debbie Newman, a former president of the Cambridge Union and the coach of the winning team at World Schools 2008, as well as several high profile alumni of the SSE Riga & LMT Debate Society.

We offer this entire package for mere €40 per debater and €20 for adjudicator coming in compliance with n-1 rule.

The registration closes on 30 November, or when the cap of 40 teams is reached, whichever is earlier. For more information, registration form and encounter with a blue speaking cow (yet another highlight of this year’s event) please visit our website http://www.sserigaiv.com/

We will continue putting every effort to make the tournament unforgettable and look forward to seeing you in December.

Should you have any questions do not hesitate to contact:

Moscow Open 2008

We are happy to invite you to Moscow Open 2008 - an event that is already a tradition.

The tournament will take place on November 29-30, 2008. This time we extend the warmest invitation to come to our regular debating championship to any team willing to spend several days in Moscow with the friendliest people you’ve ever met, to have a lot of fun playing snowball debate and, of course, to explore one of the greatest cities in the world.

This year we expect to host up to 40 teams from Russia, CIS and beyond. We don't set any caps on the number of the teams from one university, debating society or country. However, we would encourage N-1 rule for adjudication. Although we expect to have an excellent adjudication squad (a WUDC winner and some experienced debaters who have breaking at WUDC record), we would not like to find ourselves in a position of monopoly in judging.

The tournament will be held in English and it will be in the British parliamentary format (WUDC style).

Venue of the championship is MGIMO University (mgimo.ru). It has really nice facilities both for debating rounds and for rest in between them. Meals will be available at MGIMO various cafes and canteens (at your own expense). We will also organize free coffee-breaks. For our guests we will organize accommodation either in one of the nearby hotels or student hostels and dorms of other universities.

So what we want to say is that the only necessary precondition to come to MGIMO in November is your desire to do that!

Have you any question, visit our web-site http://mgimodc.ru/mo2008 or feel free to contact us mgimodc@hotmail.com

Tallinn IV 2009

Dear All,
It gives the Tallinn Debating Sociery great pleasure to announce the hosting og Tallinn IV 2009, which also happens to be the 5th Baltic Championships. The event builds on our experience from the EUDC 2008 and is planned to take place over May 3rd-8th, including a 4 day academy and 2 day tournament.

With the help of funding from the European Union Youth in Action programme we are able to cover participation costs for the whole week and 50% of travel expenses for up to 60 participants, provided they attend the whole event. We are now looking for partner organisations from EU member states that would be interested and capable of sending prople to the event from their ddebating society and/or country. Each partner organisation should commit to sending a delegation of 6-10 people. Bear in mind that not all delegates have to be members of your debating society - they just have to be legal residents of your country. Here is a list of opportunities and expectations:

What we offer
- Free participation of a weeklong event (incl. accomodation, food, most socials, and transportation in Estonia)
- 50% reimbursement of travel expenses to Tallinn, Estonia (economy class tickets, may exclude travel costs to your departure airport)
- Top-flight BP coaches to improve your debating skills
- Fun-packed event with a 4-day academy outside of Tallinn and a 2-day tournament in Tallinn
- High level of debating and judging
- and then some.....

What we expect
- Confirmation of your commitment by October 20th
- Initial list of participants' names and the group leader's name by October 25th (people may change later on with a good excuse)
- Fill in and sign the preliminary agreement form by October 25th (includes data on your organisation, initial list of participants names and a name of group leader)
- Scan and e-maiil the form to president.tvk@debate.ee by October 25th (fax alternative also available if requested)
- Post the form to Estonian Debating Society (Joe 9, 10151 Tallinn, Estonia) by October 25th
- Readiness for 1-2 representatives to attend a 2-day advanced planning meeting in Estonia during Spring 2009
- Motivation for representatives of your delegation to prepare a 45 minute lecture on the subject of innovation in the economy (specific focus to be determined later)

We hope to receive participants from all applying partnet organisations, but if we run out of slots, we will for the sake of reliability prefer organisations that we have a working relationship with from EUDC 2008 and Tallinn IV 2007. We aim to have up to 8 partner organisations. The event will also be open to other participants.

If you have any questions please contact us at president.tvk@debate.ee. We'd be more than happy to fill you in on this what we believe is an exceptionally good offer and hope to welcome you in Estonia next spring.

Yours truly,
Tallinn Debating Society - www.debate.ee/tvk

Dear all,

There are less than two weeks to go until the Imperial IV 2008! We still have some spaces left, so if you would like to register teams, do email me at debate@imperial.ac.uk.

It's going to be a great all-purpose IV - with fantastic motions and a fabulous judging pool led by Jonathan Leader Maynard (CA), it'll be a great way for you to prepare for the Oxford/Cambridge season. Not only is the Imperial IV suitable for the more experienced speaker, but it offers a unique friendly environment which is perfect for your freshers to cut their teeth in. It will be held on Saturday 1st November at Imperial College London's South Kensington Campus - and remember, registration is only £20 per team! Of course, the registration fee also includes food and drink at our post-competition social. The competition is generously sponsored by Glencore UK, so we can give you very good value for money.

If you would like more information about the competition or to register teams, let me know.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
