Invitation to the Durham IV

Hi Folks,

If you want a rigorous set of Worlds prep tournaments, then make sure
to put the Durham IV, November 5-6, 2011  in your itinerary this
autumn. It happens on the weekend right before the Oxbridge IVs which
means you can have two glorious weeks in England and 3 celebrated IVs
to attend in succession, Durham, Oxford and Cambridge, a bang for your
buck, right there.

The Durham IV is one of the biggest IVs on the calendar, (not to mention one of the main locations for the Harry Potter films)
bringing you both of the Manila WUDC chief adjudicators and returning
finally to our own university buildings. It's the IV with high-powered
debates, the big wins, the crushing losses, the one you tell stories
to your freshers and grand-freshers about for years to come. The
Durham IV.

So, why should you be coming?

Debates
Created as excellent World's preparation and to interest and
entertain, we will have the kind of debates people feud about long
after the round is over (and, as those of you who were at the final
last year will know, a little bit of crazy can sometimes come into
play). We always attract the top speakers on the circuit, but bringing
you both sides of the coin: as one of the early IVs in the year, we
hope you will bring your novices to learn from our judging panels and
from the finals. There will also be our usual novice break, where the
new and upcoming big names in debating will be discovered.

CA team:

Co-CA: flying in from Sweden we have Lucinda David, CA of Manila WUDC
2012, WUDC ESL Semi-Finalist, top break at Australs, Quarterfinalist
at Cambridge IV, best speaker of the Philippines, CA of International
La Salle IV, DCA of National debate championships and IIDC.

Co-CA: Sam Block, CA of Manila WUDC 2012. EUDC, Oxford and Mace
Champion, DCA of EUDC 2009, Grand Final Judge at WUDC 2009, top
speaker at WUDC 2008 and EUDC 2007.

Socials and so on:

In ancient times, debaters at Durham found that the many pubs and bars
in the city just couldn't keep up with their demand for alcohol - the
drink just wouldn't come out of the taps quickly enough; so we bought
a bar ourselves, and called it 24. Rumoured to be built on a native
South African burial ground, 24 is the home of the legendary oversized
buckets of Yakka, at just the right strength and lemony-ness. Even
when you're not relieving us of vast quantities of free alcohol at our
socials, the £1.20 pint prices in Durham will have you swigging away
like a Brooding Fish hurriedly gulping it's young before entering more
dangerous, southern seas...
We also have the advantage that everything is within walking distance
of everywhere, meaning no messing around with taxis between the train
station and the chamber, 24 and accommodation. In addition, Durham has
plenty of great places to stroll around in your free time, you can
have a look around our famed cathedral just outside the Union chamber,
or get turned away from the castle..

Have some details:

-Closed Motions
-High standard competition - so great for World's prep
-7 minute speeches
-5 rounds break to semis & novice break to novice finals

Reg fee:

-UK teams: £40 per team in advance, £50 on the day payable by cheque
to the Durham Union Society
-Non-UK: £35 in advance, £45 on the day
-existing reciprocal commitments honoured
-Please note that unfortunately we must still charge teams who drop
out after 01/11/11
-crash provided for all teams, please specify when you require crash
and for how many people on registering.

Judging rules:

to apply for it, or ask us to do so for you.

Where To Stop On The Way To DLSU Worlds: Top 5 Reasons To Stop By WUPID 2011

Dear Fellow Debaters,
Are you heading up to Manila for the DLSU Worlds this December? Ever since the invention of airplanes and the discovery of alien technology, you can get straight to Manila from any part of the world without the need to transit or stop. But you should. Because WUPID 2011 is simply too good to miss!

If you’re looking for a good last training stint to guarantee your invasion of the Worlds, don’t wait after WUPID 2011. Because there’s nothing else after WUPID 2011, and just before Worlds. Compete at WUPID, reach the finals, and that alone would warrant you a place at the Grand Finals of the World Cup of university debating – Worlds.

Due to the fact that we’re a mere 80 days away from WUPID, here is my list of the top 5 reasons to stop by WUPID 2011 (in no particular order):

Newton’s Law - If you flick with me, I’ll flick you too.

It’s insidious how these things happen: The CA of Worlds – Lucinda, will be one of the DCAs of WUPID 2011. She may be bringing in some ideas and influence into the discussion of how the motions at WUPID should be. Which is a good preview especially if you’re going to Worlds. But she could also be influenced herself, and effect the motions at Worlds in a particular latitude that may share similarities to the motions at WUPID.

Wickedness is when you do not accept and embrace what is vested to you for free.

Believe it: If you’re one of the universities ranked in the top 30, or a university outside of the Asia Pacific, your registration is zero. Accommodation at a 5-star hotel, meals and transport to the host university is for free. Just register and get yourself to the official hotel.

You’re out there to convince the adjudicators, not yourself.

It doesn’t really matter what your values and beliefs are regarding a motion or topic. It’s about what your critical audience (judges) perceive of the motion. And looking at the material fact that the Worlds is in Manila, it is most likely that you will be having quite a good number of Asian adjudicators in the pool. Get a glimpse of the values that they cherish or embrace, and see how does it influences their judgement. These values are not just restricted to what is being argued, but also the manner the argument is conveyed.

The cultural olympiad will make Malaysian children grow up wanting to be you.

One minute well-intentioned parents will take advantage of the cultural bounty to introduce their youngsters to the wonders of Benjamin Woolgar’s 7-minute spectacles or Fiona Prowse’s mesmerizing wit and the next thing you know, the kids will be clamoring to enroll themselves to Oxford or Monash where debating is lifestyle. Then they’ll hit voting age and start lobbying the government to increase funding for debating and before you know it, Malaysia will be a hotbed of creativity and critiques – like you.

The chance to meet two of the oldest debating zealot in the history of Worlds.

No joke: WUPID is bringing back debaters and judges from pre-historic Worlds. The first Chair of the Worlds Universities Debating Council (WUDC) will be here. To illustrate what we mean, this ancient relic has a son that’ll be debating at WUPID this year. We’ve also brought back to life the second Chair of WUDC. Talk about a rack of fine wine.

Victoria IV 2011 Details

Here are the details of the Victoria IV 2011 (the NZ British Parliamentary Open Debating Champs)

From the 18th to 20th November Victoria University of Wellington will be hosting its annual IV, the New Zealand Open British Parliamentary Championships. A highlight of the debating year, the Vic IV features some of the best debating New Zealand has to offer, along with classic Vic hospitality and a great chance to dust off those cobwebs before Worlds.

Chief Adjudicators: Christopher Bishop (WUDC Grand Final judge, Cambridge IV Winner) and Tim Mooney (WUDC runner-up, 2nd best speaker at WUDC 2011, DCA Worlds 2012)

The tournament is open entry, which means that anyone can come, regardless of experience or skill level; all you will require is a partner (although, that can also be arranged!). This makes it a great opportunity for less experienced debaters to practice against some of the best in the World, as well as giving the best a chance to prove themselves in what is typically a very high quality tournament.

As usual, we would love for teams from across the Tasman (or further) to come, so if any of our overseas friends need any extra information or assistance (or have a certain cup hidden in one of their flats…) please get in touch either by leaving a message on Facebook, or by emailing vicdebating@gmail.com

Registration will open Monday 3 October. Registration will be $90 NZD per individual, and will cover room hire, lunches on Saturday and Sunday, and a bar tab and nibbles on Friday and Sunday nights. There will also be the traditional BYO Saturday night dinner.

For judges, registration is free and the dinner will be subsidised.

We encourage NZ teams to register through their campus. There will be a n/4 judges' requirement for NZ campuses. Please note that judges must be approved by the CAs.

We're in the process of getting more overseas judges and we're also drawing from our local experienced pool. We are endeavouring to ensure that every room for at least the first 3 preliminary rounds has a chair who has broken at an international tournament.

Although the tournament cap has been filled, we are looking to find ways to expand the tournament so we still welcome people to register  which can be done at this link https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dFREaUoz...

This and other updates will be available on the website at  http://sdo2011.tumblr.com/

Do email us at singaporedebateopen2011@gmail.com if you have any queries. We look forward to seeing you at SDO 2011.

World Debate Forum Participation Subsidy

World Debate Forum Participation Subsidy
Due Date: 1 November 2011
The World Debate Forum (WDF) is a place for people who love debate to talk about how we can increase its impact. We recognize that there are many different groups using debate in unique ways to achieve their goals - be it personal enrichment, improving their communities, as education tools or just to enjoy themselves. The WDF hopes to bring all these people together, to meet just after the largest debate event in the world (the World Universities Debating Championships - WUDC), with the hope that engagement and sharing between these different sub-communities of debate lovers will strengthen the work they individually do, as well as improve the debate community as a whole.
The 2nd WDF will held from the 4th to 7th of January 2012. It will be hosted at Ateneo de Manila University, and be organized by the Ateneo Debate Society (ADS) and the International Debate Education Association (IDEA). Visit the website, www.worlddebateforum.org for more information.
IDEA has made available a limited amount of funds to subsidize participation in the WDF.  Please answer the questions below in an email, attach an updated CV, and send it to apply@idebate.org with the subject line World Debate Forum Subsidy.  Subsidies will be considered on a case-by-case basis and priority will be given to merit, need and compelling reasons for wanting to attend the WDF.  Applicants who plan to present at the WDF will be given priority over those who do not plan to present.  Those individuals who are already competing at the WUDC tournament will not be eligible for funding which goes toward air travel (unless there are exceptional circumstances), although they may apply to have the WDF registration fee waived.
  • Name
  • Email and phone number

It will include 6 rounds of debates, the semis and grand final as well as plenty of opportunities to socialise at the opening night drinks, Championship dinner and after party as well as the farewell drinks on Sunday.
